The United States designated a Venezuelan cartel as a foreign terrorist organization
US President Donald Trump’s administration on Monday designated the De Los Soles cartel in Venezuela, which Washington claims is linked to President Nicolas Maduro, as a foreign terrorist organization.
According to Isnathe United States Department of State has filed this issue in the Federal Register. This action gives the Trump administration more tools to target the cartel. According to Washington, this cartel group includes a network of Venezuelan government and military officials involved in drug trafficking.
According to the Hill News, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement last week that this group and other cartels in Venezuela are “responsible for terrorist violence throughout our hemisphere, as well as drug trafficking to the United States and Europe.”
Monday’s announcement gives the White House more authority to tighten sanctions on Venezuela and target Maduro’s assets.
The United States has moved its military assets closer to Venezuela in recent weeks. Trump has refused to rule out the possibility of using American military force or sending troops into Venezuela, but recently he has also raised the idea of talks with Maduro.
