Explosion and fire in Venezuela’s oil facilities
Local media and officials of the state oil company of Venezuela (PDVSA) reported the occurrence of a massive explosion and fire at the Petrosdeno oil facility in the east of the country.
According to RCO News Agency, local witnesses and employees of Petrosdenoba oil facilities told local media that a huge explosion was heard before the fire.
According to one of the workers, the fire first started near the distillation tower of the crude oil upgrading unit and it is possible that it has spread to the oil production facilities.
The Reuters News agency quoted officials of the state oil company of Venezuela as saying that no official report has yet been published on the amount of damage or possible casualties.
Local media have reported concerns about the fire spreading to other parts of the Petrosedno oil facility.
Petrosdeno is considered one of the key projects of the Orinoco oil industry, which has a high capacity in the promotion of Venezuela’s extra heavy crude oil, and any disruption in the operation of this unit can directly affect the country’s oil export capacity.
The Orinoco Petroleum Belt is the world’s largest source of extra-heavy oil in Venezuela, which is located in the southeast of the country along the Orinoco River.
This region has huge reserves of heavy oil (oil that cannot be extracted by traditional methods and requires special technologies), on which an important part of Venezuela’s oil production and export depends.
