Syria: Several civilians were injured in a missile attack on Meze area in Damascus
The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday morning that several civilians were injured as a result of two rockets hitting Meze area in the center of Damascus.
According to Isna, the media office of the ministry announced in a statement published by the official SANA News agency: “Damascus, the capital, was targeted by a rocket attack on Friday evening, after two Katyusha rockets fired from the outskirts of the city landed in residential areas in and around the Meze area, injuring several civilians and causing material damage to property.”
This ministry explained that in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, it has started an investigation to determine the path of the missiles and their launch location.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense confirmed that it will continue to pursue those responsible for the attack and take “deterrent measures” against anyone who threatens the security of the capital and the safety of its residents.
Earlier, the official Syrian news agency, SANA, reported that an explosion was heard in Meze area in the center of Damascus, and security forces were immediately dispatched to investigate the incident.
The statement said that specialized teams have started their work to conduct field investigations on the nature of the incident and whether it was caused by an explosion or some other malfunction.
The correspondent of this news agency confirmed that the sound of the explosion echoed throughout the Meze area, a vital and important area in the capital.
He pointed to the large presence of security forces in Mezeh and the dispatch of ambulances to this area.
This is the first time that Damascus is the target of missile attacks without identifying the perpetrators.
At the beginning of last month, a huge explosion rocked the Syrian city of Aleppo and caused material damage to some nearby places in Ashrafieh neighborhood.
Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8 last year, Damascus and several other provinces of Syria have been targeted by Israeli airstrikes, the most important of which was the bombing of the Ministry of Defense and the presidential palace.
