The proposal of the former president of Georgia to Zelensky about his release
The jailed former president of Georgia asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to include his name as a “civilian prisoner of war” on the list of prisoners for exchange.
According to Isna, the former president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili, after being transferred from a clinic to a prison in Georgia, published a post on his Facebook and emphasized that he is a citizen of Ukraine, the former head of the Odessa regional state administration and the head of the National Reform Council of Ukraine.
He also asked Zelensky to grant him this status due to his “illegal detention by the pro-Russian regime in Georgia,” according to Anatolia News agency.
The appeal came after Georgia’s Special Prisons Department announced Saakashvili’s return to prison and said his health was “satisfactory.”
Saakashvili denied this, claiming the move would force him back under the supervision of the same prison staff he claims poisoned him in March 2022.
He left Georgia in 2013 and was accused in absentia, which he says was politically motivated.
The return of the former president of Georgia to the country in October 2021 led to his immediate arrest. While serving his sentence, his health deteriorated sharply, leading to his transfer to a clinic in Tbilisi in May 2022 for treatment. He is supposed to stay in prison until 2034.
