Germany is one step closer to reinstating conscription
All German men will be required to register for possible military service from the beginning of January. If the number of volunteers is less than what is needed to fulfill NATO’s obligations, conscription will be reinstated.
According to RCO News Agency, the head of the parliamentary group of the German Union Party said in a statement: “Modern military service is coming. We will have more commitment than voluntary service. Our goal is to create a legally binding path for the increase of troops, which will be reported to the Bundestag (central German parliament) every six months.”
He added: “In this way, our society will always know the state of development of the armed forces and to what extent we can defend ourselves.”
According to Euronews, according to this plan, from January 1, about 700,000 young people born in 2008 or later will be called to register and undergo medical examinations. According to this German official, women will also receive a letter, but unlike men, it is not mandatory for them to respond.
In this regard, the German Minister of Defense said that Europe has expectations from Germany in various fields. He emphasized: “There are expectations not only in terms of budget, weapons and supplies, but also in terms of human resources.”
If the number of volunteers is insufficient to meet the needs of the army, conscription is re-established through a separate law.
The head of the parliamentary group of the Social Democratic Party explained that this program basically has two stages, the first stage being voluntary service.
He said: “We are sure that this voluntary phase can also cover the needs, but if it does not, there is a clear clause in this regard in the law. “The Bundestag must start again from the beginning and start a new legislative process without prejudice.”
The German official added that a “broader process” would follow if conscription were re-established. He explained: “This means that in the case of the return of compulsory military service, a complete set of criteria has been used when selecting the subjects, which will also include the reasons for exempting people.”
