Spanish Defense Ministry spokesman said Wednesday that the country will no longer investigate the option of buying US -made F -1 fighters.

According to the media, the Spanish Defense Ministry is choosing one between European -made Eurofitter and FCAS.

The El Pais newspaper reported earlier that the Spanish government had abandoned the F -5 purchase programs produced by the US Aerospace Giant Lockheed Martin.

The newspaper El Pace wrote that Madrid had allocated € 1.5 billion ($ 1.2 billion) in its budget for the year. But the newspaper reported that the Spanish government’s plan to spend more than € 1.5 billion for defense in Europe this year made it impossible to buy US -made fighter jets.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced plans to increase defense costs to achieve NATO’s current goal of 5 % this year, and later refused to increase costs to 5 % in the long run.
