US Senators meet with Ukrainian President in Kiev
Two US senators called for more severe sanctions against Russia during a meeting with the Ukrainian president.
While there is uncertainty about the next round of Ukrainian peace talks in the coming days, Republican Senator Lindsi Graham from South Carolina and Democratic Senator Richard Bluemanteal on Friday with President Walodimir Zelnski and other officials.
Their meeting came just days after Russia began its biggest air strike against Ukraine since the United States’s pressure on Moscow to end the conflict since the start of the war in February.
According to a statement issued by the Ukrainian Presidential Office, there were issues in question, current peace talks and the proposed law to tighten US sanctions against Russia.
Graham and Bluomatal support a bilateral plan to impose further sanctions against Russia – an idea that has been supported by a number of Republican lawmakers in recent weeks with Moscow air strikes.
According to Reuters, Graham said lawmakers will vote for the plan next week, which will be supported by four senators, and will impose a 5 % tariff on imported goods from countries that buy oil, gas, uranium and other Russian products.
The plan must be approved by both the Senate and the MPs, as well as by US President Donald Trump to become law.
Trump has so far refused to negotiate a peace agreement between Moscow and Kiev to impose further sanctions. However, in the past, he had threatened to take these actions if Russia did not agree with the ceasefire.
In response to a question from reporters on Friday, he replied: “I don’t know, I have to see it.” I look at it.
The meeting came as Ukrainian officials have raised doubts about the planned peace talks in Istanbul on Monday, as Russia has not yet sent its negotiations, which is one of Kiev’s key demands.
Zelnsky said Friday after hosting the Turkish Foreign Minister, accusing Russia of “hiding” his peace agreement from both countries, “We have no information about the so -called Russian note in Ukraine nor Turkey as a host of negotiations.”
Officials say Ukraine has provided a copy of the peace agreement.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that Moscow will submit a proposed agreement in the next round of talks.
