Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced the arrest of 1,600 people during the protests following the suspension and arrest of Akram Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, according to the Mehr News Agency.
During an investigation into charges of corruption and communication with criminal organizations that the Office of the Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office began, on March 5, 9 people, including Imamoglu, were arrested.
In the investigation, four people, including the mayor of Istanbul and Morat Chalik, the mayor of Bilikdouzo, were arrested yesterday, and four of them were released on a banned and conditional judgment.
Rasul Umrah Shahan, the mayor of Shishli, has also been arrested and the Turkish government has appointed the mayor.
Widespread protests began after Imamoglu’s arrest in Istanbul and took dozens to the streets in various Turkish cities. The demonstrations of students and youth, most of whom had come to the streets for their right and justice, were suppressed by the violence of security forces and police within five days.
According to Yirlikaya, hundreds of people were arrested during or after the demonstration, as the police intervened with the aim of suppressing protesters. The Turkish Interior Minister has said that the distance between March 1-8 (March 1 to March 3) was detained.
The preliminary election of the Republican People’s Party, as the most important competitor of the ruling Party of Development and Justice in Türkiye, was held yesterday- March 5- with the aim of nominating the party’s candidate to run in the upcoming presidential election. The Republican People’s Party of Türkiye today nominated Imam Oglu as the main candidate in the upcoming presidential election.
