France’s reaction to Istanbul mayor’s imprisonment
In response to the arrest of Istanbul mayor, the French Foreign Ministry stressed the need for Türkiye to support the rights of opposition politicians.
According to RCO News Agency, the French Foreign Ministry issued a statement to the Turkish Prosecutor’s Office in the arrest of Istanbul mayor Akram Imamoglu and filed corruption charges against him.
A spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the imprisonment of Akram Imam Qala and other Turkish political figures is “a serious attack on democracy”.
“Respect for these obligations is the key to our relations as well as the Turkish -EU relations,” he said, noting that Türkiye has said that Turkey has said it would support the rights of opposition politicians.
The Turkish Interior Ministry on Sunday dismissed the mayor of Istanbul, and the Turkish court decided yesterday that the suspended mayor of Istanbul would stay in prison until the trial.
The vote in some Turkish cities has intensified the arrest of Imamoglu, which is one of the leading figures in the country.
The vote was issued as the office of Akram Imam Khulalu announced that the Turkish prosecutor had asked the court to formally sentence him and four of his assistants to prison on the charges of “terrorism and corruption”.
However, the office of Imamoglu has called the allegations “immoral and baseless”.
Earlier, following a call for the Republican People’s Party (CHP) for demonstrations, Turkish officials intensified security measures across the country, especially in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.
At the same time, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced the arrest of four suspects in demonstrations in Turkish cities on Saturday in protest of the arrest of Imamoglu on charges of “corruption and support for terrorism”.
The Istanbul General Prosecutor’s Office announced last Wednesday the arrest of Imamoglu in connection with an organization involved in corruption, bribery and support for terrorist activities.
