Reuters: The United States did not renew Iraq’s sanctions on electricity imports from Iran
In a hostile move, Washington did not extend Iraq’s sanctions exemption for importing electricity from Iran.
According to RCO News Agency, the US State Department has announced that it had not extended the sanctions exemption that allowed Iraq to pay for electricity imports from Iran.
This sanctions exemption has been enforced since year 2 and the first government of US President Donald Trump has been renewed and extended every five days. This sanctions exemption ended on Saturday.
According to Reuters, a US State Department spokesman, on Saturday, after the announcement of Iraq’s sanctions on electricity imports from Iran, emphasized the Trump administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran, saying: “Washington does not allow Iran to achieve any level of financial or economic facilitation.”
The US State Department spokesman accused Iran, claiming to be aimed at maximizing pressure policy, “eliminating Iran’s nuclear threat, preventing the development of ballistic missile program and stopping support for terrorist groups in the region.”
He also urged the Iraqi government to minimize its dependence on Iran’s energy.
Iraqi officials have expressed concern over the Trump administration’s decision in recent days, in the midst of speculation that the sanctions were not renewed.
