Rubio: Kiev’s access to nuclear weapons is not the solution to peace in Ukraine
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday called Wallodimir Zelnsky’s request to achieve nuclear weapons unrealistic.
According to RCO News Agency, Rubio said in a speech that Zelksky’s request for nuclear weapons as a solution rather than a NATO membership was not realistic and would not be a solution to sustainable peace in the country.
Ukrainian President Walodimir Zelksky earlier announced that nuclear weapons in exchange for signing the Budapest Buddape agreement was a “completely stupid, irrational and very irresponsible” action.
In an interview, Zelnsky emphasized: “If I were to put aside nuclear weapons, I would exchange it with something really strong, something that could stop any attacker regardless of its power, territory or army; And that’s nothing but a powerful army and a security block. “For this reason, I believe that such a stupid deal was completely irrational and very irresponsible.”
The Budapest Memorandum of Understanding was an agreement between Ukraine, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom in 2008, which Ukraine abandoned its nuclear weapons that had survived since the Soviet Union, and on the contrary, these countries guarantee security, sovereignty and sovereignty. They accepted the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president believes that Ukraine had to join NATO instead of abandoning its nuclear weapons. “At that time, US and Russian politicians had united and forced Ukraine to abandon nuclear weapons, but at least we had to get something in return,” he said.
He also emphasized that Kiev’s authorities had to receive efficient security guarantees such as membership in NATO at that time, “Honestly, today the only real guarantee is NATO.”
