Trump’s nominee for US Treasury seeks tougher sanctions against Russia
Trump’s nominee for US Treasury was questioned by Republicans and Democrats about tax policy, tariffs, China and Russian sanctions.
According to Isna, Scott Bessant, Trump’s candidate for the US Treasury position, supported the economic policies and proposals of Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, and told the lawmakers at the approval meeting of the US Senate Finance Committee that if Congress approves the provisions of the Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act does not extend, the United States will face an economic disaster.
According to the Associated Press, he also stressed that the US central bank should remain independent from the influence of the president and that US sanctions on Russian oil should be more aggressive.
Bessant was nominated by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who said the United States needed a Treasury secretary “who knows what he’s doing, has the confidence of the president and loves his country.”
But Democratic lawmakers, including Sen. Ronald Wyden and Sen. Michael Bennet, are fed up with Trump’s promises to extend the 2017 tax cuts that benefit wealthy taxpayers and add to the national debt.
Bennett said that Trump’s candidate for the position of US Treasury Department is shedding “crocodile tears”.
Bessant is an American billionaire who donated to various Democratic causes in the early 2000s, most notably Al Gore’s presidential campaign, before becoming a Trump aide and adviser. He also worked for George Soros, a major Democratic backer.
Trump’s Treasury nominee also called for tougher sanctions against Russia, saying the Biden administration’s sanctions regime was not “strong” enough, adding, “I believe the previous administration was concerned about rising energy prices in the United States during the election season.”
