Brussels is concerned about the lifting of sanctions against Russia by Trump

The European Commission last summer set up a team of senior officials to analyze Biden’s orders on Russian sanctions, trade and cyber security to assess the potential impact of the repeal on EU policy. EU officials hope to use the sanctions as leverage in possible negotiations with Moscow on a ceasefire in Ukraine.

According to the US newspaper Financial Times, the EU suggests that Trump may cancel some key measures simply because they were put in place by Biden. Executive orders are issued by presidents and can be revoked at any time. New presidents typically revise existing executive orders shortly after taking office.

After coming to power in 2017, Trump canceled the orders of the “Barack Obama” administration, which led to the warming of US relations with Cuba, and withdrew from the Paris climate agreement. A year later, he withdrew the United States from the nuclear agreement with Iran.

The European Union has imposed 14 sanctions against Russia since the beginning of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine. The pressure of Western sanctions against Russia has increased the price of electricity, fuel and food in Europe and the United States.

More than 2,000 individuals and organizations have been added to the EU blacklist due to the Ukraine crisis, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing financial resources to those on the sanctions list.
