Italian News agency: Abedini is likely to be released
Referring to the meeting of the Minister of Justice of Italy with the Prime Minister of this country, the official news agency of Italy announced the possibility of the release of an Iranian citizen imprisoned in Italy.
According to RCO News Agency, after the release of the Italian journalist Cecilia Sala from Iran, there have been speculations about the fate of Iranian citizen Mohammad Abedini imprisoned in Italy.
On Wednesday evening, Ansa news agency reported the possibility of Abedini’s release while referring to the meeting between Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio and Prime Minister Georgia Meloni.
ANSA quoted the Italian Prime Minister’s Office as saying: “Nordio was supposed to meet with the Prime Minister (Meloni) on Wednesday to review the release of Mohammad Abedini, an Iranian engineer imprisoned in Italy.”
Abedini has been imprisoned in Italy based on baseless charges such as exporting drone parts used to kill three American soldiers in Jordan.
Earlier, it was reported that Meloni, in a meeting with US President-elect Donald Trump, requested the delay of Abedini’s extradition to the US in exchange for an opportunity to release Chechilia Sala, which Trump finally agreed to.
However, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said there is no connection between the issue of Cecilia’s release and the imprisoned Iranian citizen.
On Wednesday evening, Meloni and Taiani announced Sala’s release.
The Italian Prime Minister called this action the result of intensive work through “diplomatic and informational” channels and thanked those who made it possible.
Earlier, the General Directorate of Foreign Media of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance had announced in a notice regarding the news of Sala’s arrest: “Ms. Chechelia Sala, an Italian citizen, traveled to Iran on December 23, 1403 with a journalist’s visa and on December 29, 1403 He has been arrested for violating the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He was arrested in accordance with the relevant regulations.
In the continuation of this statement, it is stated: “The policy of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has always been to welcome the lawful travel and activity of journalists of various international media and to increase the number of foreign media in the country and to protect their legal rights, and this policy is followed seriously in the fourteenth government as well.” »
