Lukashenko: We don’t want Trump-style elections
Referring to the recent US elections and the attempt to assassinate the president-elect of the country, the President of Belarus said that Belarus should not allow its country’s presidential elections to turn into a “tumultuous show” like what happened in the United States.
According to RCO News Agency, the Central Election Commission of Belarus recently announced that “Alexander Lukashenko”, the current president of Belarus, has registered as a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in this country. The elections will be held on January 26 (Bahman 7).
According to the report of Rasha Today, the President of Belarus said during a speech at the government meeting: “The upcoming elections in Belarus should be a celebration.” “We don’t want a riotous show like the one in the United States.”
He added: “We don’t want an election in the style of America and Trump (President-elect) in which someone is shot in the ear or head.” “We want the Belarusian presidential election to be held gloriously, so we must avoid unnecessary criticism.”
Lukashenko refers to the failed assassination of US President-elect Donald Trump during an election campaign in Pennsylvania in July 2024, during which the President-elect’s ear was targeted and injured. He was also the target of another failed assassination attempt in September 2024 on his golf course in Florida, again surviving.
Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus undisputedly since 1994, has called on the leaders of an apparently Western-backed opposition party to return to Belarus and participate in elections. In this regard, he added: “You should return to your country and participate in voting and elections.” “The people here have to decide.”
Presidential terms in Belarus are 5 years, but in 2004 Lukashenko was able to abolish term limits by changing the constitution, thus allowing him to continue his presidency for more terms.
