The European Union called for an international investigation into the Azerbaijani plane
The EU foreign policy official, while accusing Russia, called for an international investigation into the cause of the downing of an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane.
According to RCO News Agency, “Kaya Kalas”, the foreign policy official of the European Union, reacted to the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane this evening – Saturday.
He wrote on his personal page on the X social network: “The reports published about the possibility of an anti-aircraft missile being fired by Russia and the downing of the Azerbaijani plane are reminiscent of the MH17 flight.”
Malaysia Airlines flight number 17 (MH17) was a direct flight of Malaysia Airlines that was traveling from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. This flight was shot down in the middle of the road on the border between Russia and Ukraine. Initial reports point to a missile being fired at the plane as the cause of its crash.
In this regard, Kalas accused Russia of playing a role in the downing of the Azerbaijani passenger plane and called for an “independent international investigation” into the cause of the incident.
“Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims,” he wrote at the end. I wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
The crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane in the morning of Wednesday, December 25 with 67 passengers left 38 dead and 29 people were rescued.
Flight J2-8243, which had left Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, for the city of Grozny in Russia, had to change its route for unknown reasons and had to make an emergency landing about 3 kilometers from the city of “Aghtav” in Kazakhstan.
This landing was accompanied by the fire of the plane and the destruction of half of its body, leaving significant casualties.
Both pilots of this plane were killed in this accident.
Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev described this incident as a “big tragedy” and announced that the Prime Minister will lead a commission to investigate this incident.
On Thursday, an informed source in Baku claimed to Euronews that “a Russian surface-to-air missile hit” caused the plane to crash.
On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized for the air accident that occurred in Russian airspace in a call with his Azerbaijani counterpart on Saturday evening.
The Kremlin cautioned against drawing any conclusions before the investigation is complete. Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said: “It is wrong to present any hypothesis before the investigation is concluded. “Certainly, neither we nor anyone else should do such a thing.”
Azerbaijan Airlines announced that it has suspended all flight schedules between Baku and Grozny, as well as flights between Baku and Makhachkala (the capital of the Dagestan Autonomous Republic in Russia), pending the investigation.
