Lukashenko became a candidate for the presidential election of Belarus
The Central Election Commission of Belarus announced that “Alexander Lukashenko” has registered as a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in Belarus.
According to Isna, the Central Election Commission of Belarus has stated in an announcement that five candidates, including Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, have registered as candidates for the presidential election.
“Lukashenko’s candidacy has collected more than 2.5 million signatures of support, while the other candidates have collected just over 100,000 signatures each,” the Central Election Commission of Belarus announced, according to Rasha Today.
Reports indicate that from January 1st to January 25th, 2025 (December 12th to February 6th), election campaigns will continue in Belarus, and the presidential elections of this country are scheduled to be held on January 26th (February 7th).
Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov recently said that Moscow is ready to “help” Minsk if it “attempts to destabilize” the elections.
Alexander Lukashenko was born on August 30, 1954 and is now 70 years old. He has been the president of Belarus since July 20, 1994. Therefore, he has been in this position for more than 30 years.
Presidential terms in Belarus are 5 years, but in 2004 Lukashenko was able to abolish term limits by changing the constitution, thus allowing him to continue his presidency for more terms.
Belarus declared its independence from the Soviet Union on August 25, 1991. Therefore, by 2024, 33 years will pass since the independence of Belarus. The presidential system in Belarus was established in 1994.
