Pederson: Israel’s attacks on Syria must be stopped – Mehr News Agency | RCO News Agency
According to RCO News Agency, quoted by Al Jazeera, the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pederson, said: Syria is facing a completely new reality after the overthrow of the Assad regime.
The UN envoy to Syria said: Syrian people feel that the new reality of their country belongs to them. The challenges of Syria’s progress are many. There are organized armed groups in Syria that are operating outside the framework of the command of military operations.
Pederson continued: There is concern about the escalation of military tension, because this escalation of military tension can be catastrophic. Since the overthrow of the previous government, Israel has carried out more than 350 attacks on Syrian military facilities and equipment.
The UN envoy to Syria added: “Israel’s” aggression exposes civilians to greater risks and diminishes the chances of an orderly political transition. Israel’s attacks on Syria must be stopped.
Pederson said: We must ensure that the Syrian political process remains on its path. Political transition is necessary and needed, and it needs a process that brings together all Syrian spectrums.
The UN envoy to Syria continued: We must ensure that the Syrian political process remains on the right track, otherwise I fear that we will return to instability.
Pederson added: There is a broad agreement around the issue that Resolution 2254 is not applicable under the new conditions. A new constitution must be drafted in Syria and free elections that include everyone should be held.
