Bloomberg: Saudi Arabia seeks to simultaneously strengthen relations with Iran and America
Western media reported that Riyadh plans to simultaneously strengthen its relations with Tehran and Washington.
According to Isna, the American media reported that Saudi Arabia plans to strengthen relations with Tehran and Washington before “Donald Trump” re-enters the White House.
According to the Bloomberg report, Saudi officials have said that “Mohammed bin Salman”, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, has proposed to Iranian officials to increase trade with Tehran in recent weeks.
On the other hand, Saudi Arabia is still willing to pursue the defense and strategic agreements with the United States, which have remained silent since the start of the Al-Aqsa storm operation.
According to Bloomberg, last month, Bensalman sent the Saudi security advisor, Mosaed Al-Aiban, to Washington to discuss the revival of the agreement with the officials of the Joe Biden administration.
The American media writes that the Saudis consider the approach of close relations with Tehran and Washington as vital from a geopolitical point of view.
Bensalman’s main goal is the three trillion dollar plan to diversify the Saudi economy and separate it from the oil economy. The plan, called 2030, relies on peace and foreign investment to finance ambitious projects.
Bloomberg writes that it is not yet clear what proposal Binsalman has made to Iranian officials, but a Saudi source said the trade may initially focus on products in the food and medical sectors that do not violate US and European sanctions against Iran.
The source said the deal may involve private Saudi companies with financial transactions in a third country, such as Iraq.
According to Bloomberg, the volume of trade between Iran and Saudi Arabia is currently insignificant, and Iranian officials have announced their interest in bringing it to one billion dollars.
The American media has further mentioned the agreements between Iran and Saudi Arabia in the field of sending pilgrims to Hajj, as well as the visit of the Chief of Staff of the Saudi Arabian Army to Iran. The Saudi Navy was also present in the joint exercises of Iran, Russia, Oman and other countries in the northern Indian Ocean.
According to this report, Al-Aiban was on a mission to Washington to explore the possibility of reaching an agreement with the Biden team before Trump takes office. Among the topics discussed was the possibility of Saudi Arabia being in the list of “main non-NATO allies” of America.
In the discussions between the United States and Saudi Arabia before the 7th of October about the defense treaty, there was also the prospect of normalizing relations between Riyadh and Tel Aviv, but Saudi Arabia’s position changed after the war and Riyadh wants to take steps to establish a Palestinian state.
In the end, Bloomberg writes that Bin Salman’s good relations with Trump and his son-in-law “Jared Kushner” may help him move between Iran and the United States and fulfill his foreign policy goals.
