Kiev’s response to America’s request: the new soldier wants weapons
While opposing the US request to increase the number of troops, the senior Ukrainian official said that Ukraine’s main problem at the moment is the lack of weapons, and even if new soldiers are recruited, they do not have weapons to equip them.
According to RCO News Agency, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanyshina said that the country does not need to lower the military age and emphasized the need to provide training and military weapons to Ukrainian brigades.
The United States has asked Ukraine to lower the minimum age of military service from 25 to 18 to compensate for its military shortage, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing a senior White House official.
Pointing out that Ukraine does not need to lower the military age, Stefanyshina told the English media “Financial Times” that “America should provide the training and weapons that Ukrainian brigades need to defend this country.”
Ukraine wants more weapons, but the United States says the country’s main problem is a lack of military personnel, not a lack of weapons. The American Wall Street Journal also reported today that the current government of the United States does not have enough time to use all the funds allocated to Ukraine, and a large part of these funds will be transferred to the “Donald Trump” government. On the other hand, logistical issues have prevented the deployment of heavy weapons in the remaining weeks of Joe Biden’s presidency.
Dmytro Litvin, the assistant to the president of Ukraine, said earlier that due to the lack of equipment, Ukraine does not have weapons to equip new soldiers, and in this situation, it is pointless to pressurize Kiev to reduce the military age and increase the number of soldiers.
In April, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi signed a law lowering the military age from 27 to 25, and in August Ukrainian officials confirmed that there were no plans to double the military age.
