Burrell’s trip to Kiev amid concerns about Trump’s inauguration
After the victory of “Donald Trump” in the US presidential election, the European Union foreign policy official traveled to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, to assure the country of European support.
According to Isna, at the same time as “Donald Trump” won as the elected president of the United States, concerns have intensified in Ukraine and Europe about the possible cutoff of Washington’s financial and military aid from Kiev.
“Joseph Burrell”, the head of the European Union’s foreign policy, said to the AFP reporters who accompanied him: “Our message is clear; “The Europeans will continue to support Ukraine.”
He, who will step down from the presidency next month, added: “We have supported Ukraine from the beginning, and in this last trip to Ukraine, I want to give a similar message that we will support you as much as we can.”
It is not yet clear exactly what the US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan will be for Ukraine and Washington’s military and financial aid to Kiev, but he repeatedly emphasized in his election campaigns that he will end this war very soon, maybe even before the inauguration ceremony.
Pointing out that there are only 2 months left in the current US President Joe Biden’s presidency, Burrell said: “No one knows exactly what the new administration will do. But we Europeans must use this opportunity to create a united and stronger Europe, and one of the signs of that is our role in supporting Ukraine.”
“It is up to the EU countries to decide when and how to increase aid to Ukraine,” he said, who will meet with Ukrainian officials during the trip.
Regarding the meeting of the leaders of this bloc in Budapest on Friday, the official of the European Union’s foreign policy added: “Most of the members emphasized a similar position, which is to continue supporting Ukraine.”
