Biden’s representative consulted with Aliyev and Bayramov about peace with Armenia
The special assistant to the President of the United States and one of the senior managers of the National Security Council of this country met with the President and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Baku and discussed bilateral and regional issues, including the latest status of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
According to RCO News Agency, “Jihon Bayramov”, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, today (Monday) hosted the American diplomatic delegation headed by “Michael Carpenter”, the special assistant to the President of the United States and the senior director of the European Department of the National Security Council of this country.
APA News agency reported, quoting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan: In this meeting, bilateral and regional issues between Azerbaijan and the United States and the current situation and prospects for the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia were discussed.
It was also emphasized the importance of promoting efforts to create positive developments in the bilateral relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United States and defining the perspectives of future cooperation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan announced that Bayramov gave explanations to the American delegation about the process related to the normalization of relations and the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the meeting that was held recently in Istanbul.
Despite the significant progress in the peace talks, it was emphasized that the most serious obstacle in the way of signing the final peace agreement is the continuation of territorial claims to the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan in some legal and political documents of Armenia, especially its constitution.
In this meeting, opinions were also exchanged about regional issues in the interests of the parties.
APA news agency also reported that the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev also met with Michael Carpenter and emphasized the importance of Azerbaijan’s support for issues in the regional peace agenda.
Aliyev also said that the presentation of Armenia’s final proposals on the peace agreement after 70 days will raise some doubts about the country’s intention to advance this process. Stating that the text of the Armenian constitution regarding Karabakh is the “main obstacle” to signing the peace agreement, he emphasized that Baku will take decisive measures to advance this process.
