Reports indicate that Friday’s outage at the Antonio Guiteras power plant in Matanzas, Cuba, left most people in the country in the dark.
Power has been restored in some areas, including the Cuban capital, Havana, following intensive efforts, officials said. However, about 80% of the country is still blackout, and some specific areas have experienced power outages of more than 30 hours.
Images published online show that the “Jose Marti” International Airport in Havana is engulfed in darkness. In the meantime, Cuban energy officials are evaluating measures to address the widespread blackout.
Cuba is constantly facing power outages due to problems with power plants, and it is said that the reason is the infrastructure problems of the country’s facilities, which were built by the former Soviet Union more than 40 years ago.
Cuba’s Ministry of Energy and Mines has announced that the country burns eight million tons of fuel annually, and only three million tons come from domestic consumption.
The economic sanctions imposed on Cuba have made the country dependent on Venezuela, Russia and Mexico for its energy needs.
In recent years, the Cuban government has leased out floating power plants in order to adjust power outages and increase production capacity.
