Zelensky: Without NATO, nuclear weapons are the only option for Ukraine
Volodymyr Zelensky announced today (Thursday) that Kyiv’s western partners can supply the country with long-range missiles, without giving permission to use them. He also said that if there is no NATO, nuclear weapons are the only option for Ukraine.
According to Isna, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy mentioned in his press conference in Brussels that German Chancellor Olaf Schultz cannot advise Kiev on the use of long-range weapons because Berlin has not provided them.
In this regard, Zelensky said: “I think you can give us (long-range missiles)… Do you understand what I’m saying?” But don’t let us… and (in this way) show your willingness to support (Ukraine).”
He said at the European Council meeting in Brussels that the non-nuclear strategic deterrence package envisaged in the “Victory Plan” to resolve the Ukraine conflict means the deployment of Western missiles in Ukraine.
Earlier, Zelenskiy presented in the Ukrainian parliament what he called a “victory plan” to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
This plan contains five clauses, three of which are confidential. The first point is to invite Ukraine to join NATO, the second is to remove restrictions on the use of long-range weapons to attack Russian territory, and the third is to deploy “comprehensive non-nuclear deterrence” forces on Ukrainian soil. According to this plan, the conflict should end by 2025 at the latest. Zelensky stressed that the implementation of the plan “depends on the partners.”
In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed initiatives for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine; Moscow will immediately call for a ceasefire and declare its readiness for negotiations after the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the territory of the new Russian territories.
In addition, the Russian leader added that Kiev should abandon its intention to join NATO, disarm and de-Nazify, and adopt a neutral, non-aligned, and nuclear-weapon-free status. Putin also mentioned the cancellation of sanctions against the Russian Federation in this regard.
“Without NATO, nuclear weapons are the only option for Ukraine”
The president of Ukraine also said in his press conference after his speech at the EU summit: “If Ukraine cannot join NATO, its only option will be to arm itself with nuclear weapons.”
He said: “What is the solution? Either Ukraine gets nuclear weapons or we have to be in the coalition. Today, we do not know any viable alliance other than NATO. Who gave up their nuclear weapons? were they all No, only Ukraine did. Who is fighting today? Ukraine.”
He said that he raised this issue in a meeting with former US President Donald Trump in September.
Earlier, the Associated Press reported that Zelensky gave his allies three months to approve key points of his “plan.” The News agency did not specify what Kiev plans to do if the West rejects his plan.
Zelensky previously raised the issue of Ukraine acquiring nuclear weapons on February 15, 2022, a few days before the start of Russia’s special military operation. At the time, he said Kiev might renegotiate its commitments under the Budapest Accord, in which Ukraine gave up its nuclear arsenal in exchange for security guarantees.
