According to RCO News Agency, quoted by Al Jazeera, the International Organization for Migration announced that at least 45 people were killed and dozens were missing after two boats carrying African migrants and refugees capsized and sank off the coast of Djibouti.
According to this organization, these boats left Yemen with 310 passengers and sank in the Red Sea. The organization also said that local rescue operations are underway and will support them.
The Djibouti Coast Guard also announced the ongoing joint rescue operation, and according to them, 115 people have been rescued. These boats had an accident and sank at a distance of 150 meters from the coast near “Khor Angar” area in the northwest of Djibouti.
According to the data of the International Organization for Migration, in 2023, about 400,000 people crossed the route along the Horn of Africa to Saudi Arabia, and about 700 of them died or went missing. The number of people killed or missing on this route from 2014 to 2023 was announced as about 1,000 people.
