Peskov: The revision of the nuclear doctrine is the result of the position of the West
The Kremlin spokesman said that Moscow’s decision to update Russia’s nuclear doctrine arose from the positions taken by Western countries against the country.
According to Isna, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today (Saturday) that the update of Russia’s nuclear doctrine is a reciprocal response to the positions adopted by this country’s rivals.
At a News conference, a Russian journalist asked Peskov if recent statements by top officials from the US, Germany and other Western countries – alleging Russia’s intention to attack their countries – had any influence on Moscow’s decision to update Russia’s nuclear doctorate.
“Official statements are official statements, especially from such high levels,” the Kremlin spokesman responded. “We will definitely make these statements the basis of our understanding of the approaches of our competitors and enemies.”
During the meeting of the Russian National Security Council on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to discuss updating the foundations of Russian state policy in the field of nuclear doctrine. Putin said Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in the face of foreign aggression, including when enemies pose a critical threat to Russia even with the use of conventional, non-nuclear weapons.
