Lavrov: Russia is ready to defend its interests in the Arctic
Stating that the military activities of the US and its allies have increased in the Arctic, the Russian Foreign Minister emphasized that Moscow will protect its military and political interests in the Arctic.
According to RCO News Agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that this country will protect its interests in the Arctic both militarily and diplomatically.
Moscow is determined to counter a trend by the United States and its NATO allies to hold an increasing number of military exercises in the Arctic region, Lavrov said.
In a new documentary called “Soviet Progress,” he said: “We see how NATO is increasing its exercises related to possible crises in the Arctic. “Our country is fully prepared to defend its interests from a military, political and military-technical point of view.”
Lavrov’s comments came as the Pentagon unveiled its new Arctic strategy in July, citing Russia’s alleged escalation of military activity in the Arctic region.
Moscow has reopened hundreds of Soviet-era military sites in the Arctic and increased cooperation with China on minerals and shipping routes, the US report said.
After the report was released, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused the United States of fueling tensions in the Arctic and rejected the idea that increased cooperation with China could be detrimental to the region’s stability.
