Cancellation of all flights at the second busiest airport in Belgium after a sudden strike – Mehr News Agency | RCO News Agency
According to Mehr news agency, citing Politico, following a sudden strike by airport employees in Belgium, all flights at Charleroi South Airport were canceled. This strike affected about 200 flights and stranded 30,000 passengers.
Nathalie Pirard, the airport’s spokesperson, said: This strike was very surprising because the unions had issued a statement on September 4, calling for a possible strike to start on September 19! It is unfortunate that passengers are being held hostage by these reckless actions.
He added: Although the operational capacity of the airport was reduced to 15% as a preventive measure, we were not able to provide services to passengers today!
Working conditions are at issue in these strikes, and union representatives have also complained about “aggressive management policies.” The flight schedule of this airport shows that two flights have been transferred to “Liège” airport and the rest have been canceled.
South Charleroi Airport is located about 60 km from Brussels, and last year it was named the second busiest airport in Belgium after Brussels Airport, with the transfer of about 9.4 million passengers.
