History of the thousand steps of Armenia
In 1970 and during the time of the Soviet Union, the proposal to build Cascade was proposed by one of the greatest and most famous Armenian architects named Alexander Tamanyan. The main goal of this proposal by Alexander was to connect the center of Yerevan to the north by building a magnificent and beautiful building. Since the presentation of this plan by the well-taught Armenian architect until its construction, there were many conflicts and challenges and the construction of this building was not implemented.
In the late 1970s, a person named Jim Torosian revived Alexander’s idea for the second time and presented a design that actually complemented the previous design. In Jim’s proposed plan, a huge staircase was added, which made it easier to connect the central and northern parts of Yerevan. Jim’s plan also included creating a large green space, installing statues, decorating the building, and also creating an escalator. After reviewing Jim’s plan, the construction of Yerevan’s Thousand Steps finally started in 1980.
But the work does not end there, because the earthquake of 1988 stopped the construction of this amazing structure. Also, the process of the collapse of the Soviet government in 1991 stopped the construction of this complex for 11 years. Finally, with the independence of Armenia and in 2002, the completion and reconstruction of Yerevan’s thousand steps building started again. The opening of this building was done by Gerard Kafsjian and since then it has become one of the most beautiful tourist centers of Yerevan.
