With the passage of time and the beginning of the Ottoman rule, according to the order of Sultan Suleiman, the lower parts of the watch tower were turned into a dungeon and a prison. Galata Tower, which has gone through various crises throughout its history, repeatedly went to the verge of destruction.
The terrible earthquake that happened in 1509 AD was one of the most important events that caused a lot of damage to Istanbul Tower. It was at this time that a master architect from Turkey called Hayrettin started working and restored this building with all his skill.

After a few years and due to its high height and convenient location, “Tajuddin Effendi”, who was one of the famous Turkish astronomers at that time, turned the tower into an observatory. During this time, Istanbul Kolesi was no longer a prison. Until in 1749 AD, another incident happened and the tower caught fire and the observatory was destroyed.
Some people believe that this fire was deliberately lit to prevent the work of the observatory. In the 16th century, when Sultan Murad III came to power, the Istanbul Tower was once again used as a prison. Then, at the beginning of the 18th century, it became an observatory again, and finally, with the arrival of 1794 AD, a terrible fire destroyed it again.

Years later, during the reign of Sultan Selim III, the reconstruction of this building was resumed and its architecture changed to some extent. During this renovation, a gazebo or king’s residence and two more floors were added to the building and the Galata Tower of Istanbul became a 9-story building.
In addition, the material of the roof of the structure was also changed during this period and wood and lead were used in its construction. Several years later, that is, during the reign of Sultan Mahmud, this building, which had suffered a fire again, was restored again. During this operation, the end of its conical roof became completely pointed.

However, it seems that nature did not intend to leave this building alone. Because in 1875, a strong storm happened and practically destroyed this tower by breaking the conical roof.
Following this incident, Galata Tower remained a historical ruin for nearly a century. Until, finally, between 1965 and 1967, it was restored for the last time and became its current form. Since then, Galata Tower has been listed as a historical monument in the list of tourist centers and places of interest in Istanbul.
The reason for naming the Galata Tower
In the Greek language, Galata means a person who delivers milk milked from cattle. In Italian, this word means staircase.
