This week, the earth trembled under human feet. From the desolate streets of Gaza hosting iftar during Ramadan to the glittering ski slopes of Italy preparing for the Winter Olympics, the lens of cameras tells a story of endless contrasts. In every corner of this planet, life and death, celebration and mourning, and destruction and glory are inextricably intertwined. These images are not the only photos; Rather, each one is a window to a different reality.
The war crisis continues in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and Chad. Nature also showed its angry face this week and Niles storm hit France and Germany and caused severe floods. But in the midst of chaos, life goes on in full force. In Argentina, the colorful “devils” dance carnival brought excitement to the city. Ramadan was also an opportunity for gathering. From Indonesia to Kashmir, Muslims worshiped together.
Away from human noise, the wild world tells its own story. In Alaska, a giant brown bear trying to catch salmon captured a picture of the sheer power of nature, winning a photography gold medal. On the other side of the world, in the Indian city of Calcutta, two jackals’ battle for territory in the heart of a bustling city won the “Urban Wildlife” award, reminding us that nature fights for survival even in the heart of concrete and steel.
