The Sassanid statue of Shapur, which was made in bad taste and is mistakenly called the statue of Valerian, is still wandering in the city of Tehran; Wandering which is a sign of Tehran’s urban management situation.
The construction and installation of this statue raised the voice of experts’ protest from the very first days. Association of sculptors and artists such as Mohsen Rafei warned that hasty decisions and the removal of expert views will only lead to a decline in the quality of the urban space. Critics believed that the quality of the work is low and that the subject, which symbolizes the defeat of the enemy, does not match the interactive spirit of the main squares of the city.
On the other hand, the historical mistake of naming this statue and the insistence of the municipality’s advertising apparatus on calling “Valerian” “Flip the Arab” and calling the statue a defeated person, not a victorious king, showed the haste and lack of planning of the Tehran municipality.
But not only did the elaborate statue not last in El-Enghelab Square, but its transfer to Mehrabad Airport also faced a challenge. Although Tehran Municipality had announced that this statue was temporarily displayed in El-Englab Square and its final location is Mehrabad Airport, but after being removed from El-Englab Square, this statue did not go to the airport and is kept in the parking lot of the municipality’s motor services.
Although the municipality explained again that this new statue needed protective measures, the final status of this statue is still unknown.
