The automobile company “BMW” unveiled an electric and luxury yacht called “THE ICON” in Cannes, France. Using hydrofoil technology, this innovative vessel separates from the surface of the water instead of splitting it, offering a completely new, silent and pollution-free experience of luxury cruises. Icon uses hydrofoil technology, previously used in racing boats, to drastically reduce water resistance. This feature reduces energy consumption by 80%. Icon’s driving force is provided by two 100 kW electric motors that draw their energy from 6 high-powered BMW i3 batteries.
The design of the Icon is nothing like the usual yachts. Its 13.15-meter body with geometric and broken lines is like a cut diamond, and its wide windows provide passengers with an unobstructed 360-degree view of the ocean. The interior is inspired by the art of origami, and the swivel seats allow passengers to enjoy all angles of the floating artwork and the surrounding scenery.

Icon’s luxury float reaches a maximum speed of 30 knots (55 km/h) and has a range of more than 50 nautical miles (about 100 km) with a full charge. In the cockpit, a 32-inch touch screen with 6K resolution and voice control capability provides all the necessary information to the boat captain. To complete this unique experience, Hans Zimmer, the legendary cinema composer, has created an exclusive music piece for Icon passengers, which combines the silence of electric travel with a pleasant sound.
The unveiling of Icon is not only a big step for BMW in entering the field of marine transportation, but also defines a new paradigm in the yacht industry; Where luxury, performance and environmental sustainability meet perfectly.
