The Church of the Holy Savior, located in the countryside of La Laguna, Spain, has won the world’s largest architecture award in 2025. Built in a less urbanized neighborhood, this project is not just a religious structure; Rather, it is considered a multi-purpose space including a church, social center and a public square. The purpose of the structure is to create a sense of belonging among local residents. (yankodesign)

The most important thing about the structure of the Church of the Holy Savior is how it is financed. The entire building was built with small donations from local residents and without any major sponsors or government assistance. This intermittent and irregular flow of money directly affected the timeline of building development; Finally, this led to the formation of the final design, which was made in four independent volumes in different phases.
In the design of the Church of the Holy Savior, with a completely minimalist approach, exposed concrete has been used, which induces a raw and primitive feeling. The concrete texture is rough and unpolished, which gives it an organic quality. This type of texture is not seen in modern religious architecture. There is no fancy view here to attract attention; Rather, the material itself has become the main statement.

What makes the design of the Church of the Holy Savior stand out is the attention to natural light; During the day, the light filters in through the built-in apertures, and the shadows and highlights are constantly changing. The interior also maintains this honest approach and provides the sense of peace and tranquility needed for a spiritual space.
The success of the Church of the Holy Savior in the World Architecture Festival (WAF) is also noteworthy. The judges chose this project among hundreds of global projects by understanding the originality and responding to the real needs of the society. The jury emphasized that this project, unlike many of today’s designs that seek fleeting visual effects and virality, overcomes the challenges of traditional design with deliberate simplicity.
The Church of the Holy Savior sets an important model for the future of architecture; In an era where large projects often serve the interests of corporations or wealthy clients, this building shows how a community can pool its resources to create a meaningful space for all.
