Harvesting of saffron, the red gold of South Khorasan, is underway in the fields of Qaenat. The cultivated area of this product in the province is more than 16 thousand hectares and its high quality has made South Khorasan one of the hubs of saffron production in Iran and the world.
The average cultivation of saffron is about 10 tons per hectare, from which usually about 10 kg of dry saffron is obtained. Each worker in the saffron fields can harvest between 5 and 7 kilos of saffron flowers daily.
Early November to early December is the best time to harvest saffron and South Khorasan farmers are busy collecting red gold at this time. Hossein Tohidfar’s video report in Fars shows attractive frames of the difficult stages of harvesting saffron.
