The use of key boxes in tourist accommodation units was banned in Italy.
Key boxes are a way to make it easier for tourists to access short-term accommodation units. These boxes help the owner and tourists to access at any time of the day and night without the presence of anyone other than tourists.
This possibility, which has become widespread in the touristic cities of the world, has now brought many challenges and many are seeking to limit and ban it. This ban will now be implemented in all of Italy for another reason. The head of the Italian police has announced that the owners of accommodation units must confirm the identity of their guests in person, and the use of key boxes and similar methods is no longer possible.
The increasing popularity of short-term rentals in touristic cities has made many remote owners without physical presence able to easily rent their houses to tourists without even meeting them once.
Italy, on the eve of the 2025 celebrations of the Catholic Church, is trying to increase security measures and completely ban these key boxes, which have already been objected to.
