Two works of art by the American artist, Andy Warhol, were stolen from a gallery in the Netherlands during a nighttime robbery.
Thieves stole four works by Andy Warhol, the famous American painter, in the Netherlands, but took only two with them.
The robbery happened at the MPV gallery in the Dutch province of North Brabant. Thieves stole four silkscreen prints from Andy Warhol’s “Royal Queens” collection. However, after the theft, they left two works on the side of the street and took only two works with them.
According to the owner of the gallery, the two stolen works are pictures of Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of England and Margaret II, Queen of Denmark. Also, the police announced that the thieves probably entered the gallery with some kind of explosion that damaged the gallery and the surrounding buildings. After the robbery, the thieves realized that the two works of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Queen Ntombi Aswatini did not fit in their car and left the two works on the side of the street.
These four works were supposed to be sold as a collection at the Pan Amsterdam art exhibition that will be held later this month.
The works are part of a series of 16 silkscreen prints of four queens that Warhol, considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, created in 1985 – two years before his death.
It should be mentioned that Warhol also has famous works of the second Pahlavi family, especially Farah Pahlavi, in his collection.
