If you plan to travel abroad, prepare yourself to pay the tourist tax. In 2024, from Venice to Bali, many of the world’s tourist destinations will introduce a tourist tax.
Tourist tax is not a new concept. City taxes have long been common in many European countries, such as Greece, Spain and Germany, and hotel taxes are standard in many destinations, including US states. The impact of Corona on the tourism industry was severe; Hotels, restaurants and tourist places were closed and people who depended on tourism faced heavy losses. Governments also got less revenue for development and maintenance. For this reason, many countries have decided to implement a tourist tax to boost the economy and revitalize local communities. In the following, we will examine exactly what the tourist tax is and which countries will apply this tax in 2024.
What is the tourist tax?
Initially, the tourist tax was introduced by some governments in order to control too many tourists and generate income from the arrival of a large number of travelers. For example, since 1974, the country of Bhutan has asked tourists to enter a significant amount of money. The country uses the tax (called the “daily sustainable development fee”) to preserve natural beauty and protect traditional Buddhist culture. Similarly, the city of Barcelona uses the tourism tax to finance local development and construction projects. Most tourist taxes are added to the cost of your stay.
