Famous billionaire Mark Cuban has fallen victim to the latest cryptocurrency wallet hack. According to reports, nearly $870,000 was drained from Kuban’s Metamask wallet. Kuban confirmed the hack and stated that he probably downloaded the wrong version of Metamask.
Thanks to the vigilance of blockchain researcher @WazzCrypto, the hack was discovered on September 15 around 8pm UTC. He noticed unusual activity associated with one of Cuban’s wallets, which had been inactive for nearly five months.
According to the transaction records available in Etherscan, various assets including USDC, Tether (USDT) and Lido Stake Ether (stETH) were quickly withdrawn from the Cuban wallet in a short span of 10 minutes. Interestingly, Cuban subsequently withdrew the additional $2 million USDC and transferred it to an alternative wallet. This sequence of transactions raised suspicions that Cuban may be moving assets in his portfolio.

However, a few hours later, Kuban himself confirmed that he had entered Metamsk for the first time in months. Cuban was initially unaware of the wallet’s recent activity and later said he suspected someone had been monitoring his actions. “I’m pretty sure I downloaded a version of Metamask that has a lot of different things in it,” Kuban continued. Kuban added that he successfully transferred the remaining assets to Coinbase using the dongle used by Coinbase for authentication.
Earlier in June 2021, after the failure of an algorithmic stablecoin called Iron Finance, Kuban lost an undisclosed amount of his capital due to a rogue money scam.
