Leaked information shows that two Xperia devices are under development. Qualcomm has already confirmed that Sony will be one of the launch partners for its latest flagship chip, Snapdragon 8 Elite 5th generation. In recent weeks, the focus of rumors has been on the Xperia 1 VIII, which is considered to be the successor to the Xperia 1 VII. Previous evidence indicated that Sony has registered several model numbers that may be related to its upcoming flagship phone.
Now the Walkman blog has published a separate set of model IDs that point to an unreleased model of the Sony Xperia phone, dispelling speculation of a possible revival of the Xperia 5 series. Sony’s mobile division is in an uncertain state, but it had previously expanded its product line with the introduction of the Xperia 1 VII and Xperia 10 VII. The first mentioned phone uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, while the second device is equipped with the mid-range Snapdragon 6 generation 3 chip.
Given that the new model number PM-152xx corresponds to the Xperia 1 VIII, the six additional codes PM-1530-BV, PM-1531-BV, PM-1532-BV, PM-1533-BV, PM-1534-BV and PM-1555-BV seem to indicate regional versions of a new mid-range phone. This device will probably be the Xperia 10 VIII instead of a new Xperia 5. After the release of the fifth generation Xperia 5, Sony stopped the production of this series due to a decrease in demand, and its return seems unlikely. Instead, Sony seems to be sticking to a simpler strategy with two products, a flagship Xperia 1 and a mid-range Xperia 10.
This also means that the Xperia 1 VIII will probably be the only Sony smartphone to use the 5th generation Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. Qualcomm has already confirmed that Sony will soon use this chip, thus cementing the position of this flagship in Sony’s 2025 product line-up. If the leaked information is true, Sony fans can expect a new flagship and an updated mid-range phone in the coming months.
