Whatsap has been testing the capability since April that allows users to select the quality of images and videos that are automatically loaded on their device. This feature is now activated for some Android users who are a member of the beta app.
According to information released by Wabetainfo, this feature has been activated in a number of users for Android for Android 4.3.1.1 and is expected to be available to more beta users in the coming weeks. If you are a beta user and this feature is enabled, you can see it in the Settings> Storage and Data WhatsApp section below Media Upload Quality. This section is specified as Auto-Download Quality and includes two standard quality and HD quality options.
If you select Standard Quality, WhatsApp will automatically download a compressed version of the media file. In contrast, if you choose HD Quality, a high resolution version will be loaded directly on your device. However, if you have selected the standard option for automatic download, you can still view the HD version of the media file manually in the conversation, provided that this version is still available on WhatsApp servers.
WhatsApp is now using a new system with a dual upload process when sending high quality images and videos, according to Wabetainfo. This means that when users send a photo or video in HD quality, their device automatically creates both standard and HD versions of that media for uploading.
This dual upload mechanism is essential because because of the entire encryption, WhatsApp is unable to compress files on its servers; Therefore, both standard and HD versions should be loaded by the transmitter on WhatsApp servers. If the recipient has selected the standard option for automatic download, the compressed version of the downloaded file will be decoded and decoded on his device.
