NASA’s Photo of the Day shows the Red Rectangle Nebula from the Hubble Space Telescope.
According to RCO News Agency, At the center of the Red Rectangle Nebula is an old binary star system that certainly powers the nebula, but still doesn’t explain its colors.
According to NASA, The unusual shape of the red rectangle is likely due to a dense mass of dust that forms the spherical outflow into sharp cones. Since we are viewing the dust plume from the edge, the outer edges of the cones appear to be X-shaped.
Distinct step shapes indicate that this outflow occurs irregularly. However, the unusual colors of the nebula are less well known, and speculation suggests that these colors are partly caused by hydrocarbon molecules, which may actually be the building blocks of organic life.
The red rectangular nebula is located about 2,300 light-years from Earth in the constellation Monoceros. The nebula is shown in full detail in the images below as a processed image from the Hubble Space Telescope.
Within a few million years, the Red Rectangle Nebula will likely transform into a planetary nebula as one of the central stars runs out of nuclear fuel.
