The “100 Hours of Astronomy” world celebration is an international event that is held every year with the participation of hundreds of scientific institutions, astronomical associations, educational centers and observatories, and its goal is to share the beauty and wonders of the night sky with the public in a certain period of time. This event was held for the first time in the International Year of Astronomy (2009 AD / 2008) and the same year it was also welcomed by astronomy groups in Iran. “100 Hours of Astronomy” was revived in 2019 (1398 solar) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the International Astronomical Union and has continued annually since then.
In this year’s celebration, which was held from Mehr 10 to 13, 1404 (October 2 to 5, 2025), Iran once again had a strong presence in this global event, thanks to the efforts of the International Astronomical Union Promotion Office in Iran and the amateur committee of the Astronomical Society of Iran, and with the wide participation of the country’s amateur astronomy activists. Astronomical clubs and associations, public groups and scientific centers, including observatories, registered more than 30 different programs in the official system of the International Astronomical Union Promotion Office.
Based on the data published in website The official extension office of the International Astronomical Union (iauoutreach.org), out of a total of 327 events registered worldwide, more than 30 events have been dedicated to Iran; This statistic is considered to be the highest number of events recorded by one country after Romania and shows the high capacity of the amateur astronomy community and the promotion of astronomy in Iran.
One of the prominent manifestations of Iran’s presence in this year’s celebration was the high geographical range of the participants; So that the events were not limited to big cities like Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan, Tabriz and Shiraz and cities like Euclid, Sari, Neishabur, Ahvaz, Gorgan, Arak, Pardis, Bam, Yazd and Jam are also visible on the world map of this celebration.
The world celebration of “100 Hours of Astronomy” was held in 2025 at the same time as the 100th anniversary of the establishment of observatories, and it emphasized the role of these cultural-educational centers in promoting astronomy. The amateur committee of the Astronomical Society of Iran has expressed the hope that this passionate and effective presence of the country’s astronomy activists in the celebration of “100 hours of astronomy” will be the basis for more attention and support from the institutions in charge of promoting science and culture, and will lead to the strengthening of the people’s motivation and enthusiasm to deal with the knowledge of astronomy and the night sky.
