Isna/Isfahan Astronomer said: The term Moon in Scorpio is related to the ancient beliefs that the movement of the moon in the constellation of Scorpio was considered an ominous symbol, and this fear is reflected in religions and cultures.
In an interview with ISNA, Alireza Bayat said: The term moon in Scorpio is rooted in astronomy and traditional and religious beliefs of many nations. This concept goes back to the connection of the moon with one of the 12 constellations of the zodiac. Alboruj region is a set of 12 constellations that the sun passes through during its annual apparent movement from the perspective of an earthly observer.
He added: One of these constellations is called Scorpius. The reason for this name is its appearance from the point of view of an earthly observer, in such a way that a group of stars draw a shape similar to a scorpion in the sky. These stars are actually very far from each other (a few light years or more) and there is no physical connection between them, but from our point of view on earth, this shape looks like a scorpion.
This astronomy expert continued: In ancient times, due to the lack of electricity and artificial lighting, people depended heavily on the light of the sun and the moon. The moon and the sun were sacred and even worshiped in many ancient civilizations and religions such as Mithraism. At night, when the sky became dark and starry, people used to observe and name the stars and constellations.
Bayat said: One of these constellations was Scorpio, which people saw in the sky in the form of a scorpion. These beliefs made the ancient people think that whenever the moon entered this constellation, the scorpion threatened the moon. This fear caused them to avoid doing important things and to pray and ask for forgiveness.
The movement of the moon and the moon in Scorpio
He added: The moon, with a period of 29 to 30 days around the earth, rises about 50 minutes later every day. This delay causes the moon’s position in the sky to change every day and appear in different constellations from the perspective of an earthly observer. During each lunar month, the moon is in the constellation Scorpio for about two to three nights.
Astronomer continued: The old belief that a scorpion can swallow the moon caused the ancient people to avoid doing important things such as marriage, travel or business in this particular period of time. These beliefs were later reflected in different religions, including Islam.
Bayat added: In Islamic traditions, the moon in Scorpio is defined in two ways; First, when the moon apparently enters the range of the Scorpio constellation and remains in this state until leaving it. Second, when the Moon approaches Scorpio, one of the 12 supposed signs of the zodiac. In Islamic beliefs, it is recommended to avoid doing certain things such as marriage, traveling or starting important activities during the moon in Scorpio.
He stated: In the month of Bahman this year, the moon in Scorpio began on 2 Bahman and continued until 7:50 am on 5 Bahman, and the moon in the constellation of Scorpio began at 15:10 on 5 Bahman and lasted until It will continue at 13:50 on Sunday, February 7.
Astronomer said: This information shows that the moon in Scorpio still maintains its position in different cultures and beliefs, although from a scientific point of view, there is no physical connection between the moon and the constellation of Scorpio.
