According to NASA, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sonny Williams, who traveled to the International Space Station (ISS) with the Starliner capsule, will significantly increase their stay in this space laboratory. The two astronauts will remain on the space station until February 2025 instead of the planned return earlier this year.
According to Tekna Technology Media’s Astronomy News Service, the extension of this mission was made due to a technical problem in the propulsion system of the Starliner capsule during the connection to the space station. Due to the importance of the safety of the astronauts, NASA decided not to return them with the same capsule and return them to Earth on another mission. Willmore and Williams, along with two other astronauts from the Crew-9 mission, will return to Earth aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule. Meanwhile, the Starliner capsule will return to Earth empty to be examined and repaired.
NASA is conducting extensive medical studies to investigate the long-term effects of space travel on the human body due to the increase in the duration of astronauts’ stay in the space station. These studies help scientists find ways to keep astronauts healthy during long-duration missions.
Long-duration missions on the International Space Station play an important role in advancing space research and preparing for future missions to the Moon and Mars. As astronauts stay longer in space, scientists can gather more information about the effects of the space environment on the human body and develop the technologies needed for longer space missions.
