CERN scientists have developed a new device that uses accelerator technology to treat brain cancer. The device uses high-power ion radiation therapy and it is possible to destroy head and neck tumors with its help. High precision and proper targeting will also reduce the side effects of radiation therapy. A small particle detector called
According to Tekna technology and technology news service, the device made by CERN physicists can help identify and monitor tumors during ion radiation therapy. Doctors can use this device to target more easily and the side effects of the treatment will be less.
This device, made by a Czech company, has been tested by scientists from the Center for Tumor Diseases in Germany, the Cancer Research Center in this country, and the Heidelberg Phototherapy Center.
Like other treatment methods, ion therapy has many disadvantages. Firing radiation to destroy the tumor can also affect the surrounding healthy tissues and therefore create special challenges in the brain. Also, this issue may damage the patient's optic nerves or memory. Meanwhile, the ideal treatment should focus only on the destruction of the tumor and limit the surrounding damaged area as much as possible. Current technologies cannot be highly accurate in targeting ions.
The new device made by the researchers is a particle detector in which the CERN accelerator technology is used and it can identify the secondary particles obtained from the impact of ions on the patient's body deep in the brain and increase the effect of radiation therapy in patients. The technology used also causes less damage to healthy brain tissues. Also, doctors can shoot higher doses of radiation to the tumor and thus greatly increase the effectiveness of the treatment.
