Ottawa launched a regularization program during the Covid-19 pandemic for asylum seekers working in the health sector.
Since then, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has expressed interest in expanding the plan.

In a letter issued in December 2021, the Minister of Immigration and Citizenship, Trudeau, was asked to explore ways to systematize the status of undocumented workers who contribute to Canadian communities, based on existing pilot programs.
In this regard, the spokesperson of the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada said that the necessary action to fulfill the mandatory obligations regarding the regularization of the status of illegal workers is still ongoing.
According to immigration officials, the agency is looking at various ways to help people who are currently living in Canada.
Regularization of residence status gives people working illegally in Canada the right to benefit from better work, education and living conditions, as well as access to universal health care.
