Canada‘s federal immigration minister, Mark Miller, admitted in an interview that Justin Trudeau’s government has been slow to reduce the number of immigrants to the country. The admission came after several provincial premiers, including those of Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Quebec, publicly criticized the federal government’s immigration policies. Quebec Premier Francois Lugo has called for immigration to be a major issue in the upcoming federal election.

Minister Miller stated that the government increased the number of immigrants due to the need of businesses for foreign workers after the Covid-19 pandemic, but now the acceptance of temporary immigrants has exceeded the reasonable limit. He explained that the federal government has recently started measures to reduce the number of immigrants, but the results of these measures will be revealed over time. For example, a 10% reduction in student visas for international students is one of these measures.
Miller also emphasized that the effects of this reduction of temporary immigrants in some cities, such as the reduction of rent increase rates, are gradually being observed, and the concrete results of these policies are expected to be more visible by the end of 2025.
