Welcoming the campaign requesting to increase the duration of temporary stay

Just a few days after the new decision of the Ministry of Immigration to increase the level of financial ability to obtain a study permit by 100%, as well as ending the extension of the post-graduation work permit deadline, international students and post-graduation work permit holders, especially those whose permits will expire soon in the year set to expire in 2024, have joined hands to give momentum to a campaign to extend the duration of post-graduation work permits that has been active since May.

The signatories of this campaign want the Canadian government to increase the duration of post-graduation work permits to two years and five years.
Currently, international students who have studied in Canada for one year receive a one-year work permit after graduation. On the other hand, students who have studied in Canada for more than two years receive a three-year work permit after graduation.

The campaign to increase the duration of the post-graduation work permit, registered under the name PGWP52 by an immigrant rights defender on Change.org, has so far collected nearly 30,000 signatures and is only 5,000 signatures away from reaching its goal.

According to Statistics Canada data, as of the third quarter of 2023, nearly 2 million people are in Canada with study or work permits. However, the current levels of immigrant acceptance show that only 300,000 economic immigration applicants to Canada will succeed in obtaining permanent residence in 2024.

This means that the current duration of temporary residence in Canada, which was set in 2008 when the number of international students and immigration applicants was more limited, does not meet current needs.

Citing evidence of the need to gain Canadian work experience, prevent abuse of applicants, and alleviate anxiety and insecurity, as well as the success of the 18-month work permit scheme for post-graduation holders, the campaign has called on the Canadian government to take the necessary measures. to increase the duration of temporary stay.
