International students in Canada soon won’t be able to work more than 20 hours a week Last fall, then-federal Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said he would temporarily put a 20-hour work week cap on the number of hours eligible students can work off-campus. Has been removed.
This change started last November and will end on December 31, 2023. The federal government also announced last year that study permit holders will still be expected to balance their study and work commitments, as those who stop studying or change their course to part-time are no longer eligible to work full-time outside of school. They will not be universities.
The spokesperson of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada stated that the purpose of this action is to provide more opportunities to qualified international students to gain valuable work experience in Canada and increase access to the workforce to maintain Canada’s economic growth after the pandemic.
Since international students will again be limited to 20 hours of work per week in 2024, some of them may be under economic pressure. According to Statistics Canada, a full-time international student in Canada will pay an average of $38,081 for a bachelor’s degree program in the 2023-24 academic year. Meanwhile, Canadian students will pay $7076.
This temporary program by the Department of Immigration, which allowed international students to work full-time off campus, is now being evaluated by the Canadian government to see how well international students have benefited from it.
